| Geography: |
Hungary is situated in Central Europe, sharing borders to the N with Slovak Republic, to the NE with the CIS, to the E with Romania, to the S with Croatia and Yugoslavia and to the W with Austria and Slovenia. The variety of several ranges of hills, chiefly in the north and west have offered terrain for wine cultures throughout the centuries. The Great Plain stretches east from the Danube to the foothills o the Carpathian Mountains in the CIS, to the mountains of Transsylvania in Romania, and S to the Fruska Gora range in Croatia. Parts of the plain are called Puszta, home of protected flora and fauna, where horse and kettle breeding goes back to the times of the Conquest of the land in the 10th century A.D. Lake Balaton is the largest unbroken stretch of inland water in Central Europe, an ideal summer resort for holiday makers.
Budapest, the metropole with its unrivalled flair and unique geographic location remains the attraction Number One for travellers.
